Tips for Choosing a Safe Crib | Northern VA Newborn Photographers

We’ve had the pleasure of doing quite a few professional pregnancy photos for Brambleton, VA clients. We love chatting with these expectant moms. It’s always interesting to compare notes on how quickly parenting changes including the effect of technology (we certainly didn’t have video monitors!), furniture styles, and even maternity styles!

We recently came across an interesting article on healthychildren.org we’d love to share with our expectant clients out there! Below we include their tips on how to choose a safe crib. Thanks to HealthyChildren for publishing this informative article!

As a newborn photographer in Northern VA, it’s interesting for us to see updated codes and smarter, safer options for our most precious infants. We always recommend you speak to your pediatrician about what is best for your child.

How to Choose a Safe Crib

• Bars should be spaced no more than 2 3/8 inches apart.

• The mattress should be very firm and should not sag under your baby’s weight. It should fit in the crib snugly, with no space between it and the crib walls.

• The top of the crib rail should be at least 26 inches from the top of the mattress. Periodically lower the mattress as your child gets taller.

• The headboards and footboards should be solid, with no decorative cutouts. Corner posts that could cause injury or snag clothing should be removed.

• Do not use cribs with drop rails. These are not safe.

• Crib bumpers (or bumper pads) may seem as though they can help protect babies from drafts and bumps, but they should not be used in cribs. There is no evidence that bumper pads can prevent serious injuries, and they pose a risk of suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment. In addition, older babies can use them for climbing out of the crib.

• Keep large toys and stuffed animals out of the crib, as your baby may use them to get a leg up and over the rail. Pillows, bulky comforters, and heavy blankets do not belong in a crib; a baby can smother under them.

• Place the crib away from windows, where direct sunlight and drafts can make your baby uncomfortable. A crib can become uncomfortably hot if placed too near a radiator. Also, make sure that there are no strings from blinds or curtains close by that can wrap around the baby’s neck.

• Once your child is about 3 feet tall, he should start sleeping in a bed. If you are worried about him falling out of bed, you may want to start with the mattress on the floor.

• Your baby should never sleep on a water bed, sheepskin, pillow, sofa, armchair, or other soft surface.

• Babies do not need extra support, such as from rolled blankets or commercial devices, to keep them on their backs. Cumbersome materials like these clutter up the crib and may be hazardous for a baby.

As a leading Brambleton, VA area photographer specializing in family and professional pregnancy photos, we hope that you enjoy our blog as much as we enjoy sharing it with you. It keeps us connected to our clients and others. If you have any ideas for topics you’d like us to cover, please contact us! Send us an email with your idea. The Best Newborn Portraits | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

The beauty and value of newborn photography are indisputable. Newborn pictures are precious opportunities to capture your baby’s image in its earliest days of life. As Northern Virginia photographers in the Brambleton, VA area, we are often asked how we get such beautiful newborn portraits.

We thought we’d write down five things which lie behind the success of our newborn portraiture. We hope you enjoy them.

Personalizing & Styling Your Newborn Portraits

We can personalize your baby’s session to reflect what you want – within reason and safety, of course! Just as with all our portrait sessions, there’s a lot of thought and planning put into each session. We can do “posed” pictures of your baby, where they are sleeping and looking perfectly angelic and adorable. We can do a more casual and candid portrait of the parents holding their baby in a loving and natural way. And, of course, we can do both types of pictures either in our studio, your home, or in our stunning Outdoor Portrait Park (although we prefer to reserve our outdoor portrait park for when baby is a bit older!) The options are endless, and we can discuss them during our intake discussion!

Talk to us! If you have specific requests, share them with us!

As newborn photographers we can’t create portraits you want if we don’t know what that is. We love hearing our clients’ ideas! When you call us to schedule a session with us, we want to get to know you and understand your vision for your portrait whether it’s a newborn session, senior portrait, or family session. We do most of our newborn sessions indoors, but we can certainly do them outdoors as well. We’re happy to discuss your many options with you for the most beautiful and loving newborn portrait!

Timing is everything!

We recommend doing newborn pictures within the first seven days post birth, especially if you want the iconic sleeping baby picture. Babies are still quite sleepy and “pliable” (they’re relatively easy to pose while sleeping at that age) during that first week and it’s the easiest and the best time to capture them so naturally.

We will prep you!

We’ve been doing photography for a long time. We don’t want you to worry about your session, what you need to do or bring with you. We will fully prep you before your newborn session – or any of our sessions – and you will know just what to expect. There are no surprises especially when we’re working with babies and children. We’ll talk you through it and offer you plenty of information ahead of time. Check out our previous blog post, Newborn and Baby Photography Q&A, for some tips!

Bring the kitchen sink!

Ok, not really, but if you are coming to us, remember to bring your well-stocked baby or diaper bag along with extra changes of clothes (maybe an extra top for Mom and Dad as well just in case of accidents). Again, we’ll send you some suggestions ahead of your appointment.

You have options when it comes to Northern Virginia photographers in the Brambleton, VA area, but none will be as committed and as devoted as we are to our craft and, most importantly, to our clients. As small business owners, we have long-established core values we remain committed to to serve you best. Our blog is part of our commitment to our clients to stay in touch and offer advice.

If you have any questions about newborn photography, call us!

Memory or Shadow Box for the Baby | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Memory or Shadow Box for the Baby | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

We love working with expectant moms! Moms-to-be are beautiful! It’s one of the most fun aspects of our business. Professional pregnancy photos in the Brambleton, VA area bring us into regular contact with excited moms-to-be. These women are perfectly glowing, but most of all, they’re excited about their baby’s arrival! Throughout our portrait sessions, we usually talk about a variety of exciting and often diverse topics. One of these conversations led to the idea of a creating a memento display box of very special items from a baby’s first year. We love this idea and want to share it with you as well.

There are so many variations you can do with this idea, so just let your creativity take over! We’ve put together some tips below. Before you read them, however, try clicking on this nifty Google search to view a plethora of creative memento or shadow boxes others have created for their babies! We love so many of them it is hard to pick favorites.

Before you get all Martha Stewart and start creating a memento box for your baby, here are few things to consider first:

* What would you like put into your box?
* Do you want any pre-birth items included in the box such as an ultrasound picture, a picture of you and your partner or a picture from your maternity photography session?
* Would you prefer to include tokens representing your baby’s first days in this world such as the birth announcement, newborn booties and outfit they wore upon leaving the hospital, their baby bracelet from the hospital or hospital swaddling blanket? The possibilities are many.
* You could wait and collect special mementos throughout your baby’s first year. You can use those items to build a box in honor of their first year of life. If you choose a first-year memento box, it’s important to be especially selective due to limited space — unless you opt to purchase an extra-large shadow box. One recommendation is to create a list of items as you think of them or as they present themselves. You can then use that list to help you cull down to a final selection of mementos.
* Lastly, but very importantly, you should select items of significant emotional value. Consider that an object with significance today might not be as important in the future. Choose items with emotional value you’ll remember and be able to share in the future.

Once you have made your decision as to what type of memento box you would like to create, then you can begin putting together your collection of items! Now you can be as creative as you want!

If you haven’t scheduled a professional pregnancy photo session (also know as maternity portrait session), and you live near the Sterling, VA or Brambleton, VA areas, call us to schedule your session. We’re sure you’ll enjoy working with us and we know we’ll love to meet you!

Your Family’s Legacy Through Photography | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Your Family’s Legacy Through Photography | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Your Family’s Legacy Through Photography | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

As Northern Virginia photographers near Brambleton, VA and Broadlands, VA, we often talk about the importance of creating a photographic legacy of family. It is possible to combine your snapshots as well as professional portraiture to craft that legacy – sort of a photographic journal.

The snapshots you take of your children and family help fill its pages. Your professional portraits, on the other hand, represent the chapters of the journal. You can have one without the other, but together they document your life more thoroughly and richly. Together, they literally construct and document the bigger picture of your life story, your family’s story.

We recently came across an interesting article by Darlene Hildebrandt offering insight and tips to creating a photographic legacy. It’s good reminder of the role photography – both professional and amateur – can play in our lives. We have summarized its suggestions below for you. However, we strongly recommend clicking on the link to read Darlene’s full article!

• Documentary means you capture it naturally in the subject’s environment.
For family snapshots which can be a great way to document your family’s home life, just keep your camera charged and handy at all times. Whip it out for any particularly poignant moments.

• Capture the person’s essence – their real personality.
As professional photographers, this is our goal for each portrait session, especially baby pictures! We want to reflect the subject’s true character and personality in the portrait so that years from now, it will serve as a terrific legacy to who they were.

• Remember to capture the details and scene setters.
This can be rather subjective but one example is the beloved teddy bear included in a toddler’s picture; the shiny new wedding ring on a bride’s finger in a wedding picture; or the tear streaming down a grandmother’s face.

• Think big picture.
Take shots for the background of a collage or potential photobook or album. Knowing what your plans are for a photo or portrait can make a difference in its staging. Snapshots are just that – something snapped quickly and easily for any number of purposes. Take them at a baby shower and you can create a photo book as a gift. A portrait, on the other hand, has a bigger purpose and, usually, destination. As family photographers, we compose and stage it so that it’s a piece of art to display in your home for generations.

• Not every photo needs to show their face.
This is a powerful technique. Some of the most poignant or memorable portraits don’t show the subject’s face. Think of the iconic photograph of the soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima. Although shot in silhouette, it’s no less powerful.

• Create a story with images. Leave a legacy.
We can’t repeat this one enough. Images and pictures tell a story. You can tell your story for the generations not yet born by taking your daily snapshots and, more importantly, by doing professional portraits. The portraits, unlike the snapshots, will be professionally printed on museum-quality medium rated to last 150 to 200 years, a true family heirloom.

• Create memories.
Capture your memories in portraiture so that you can share your story well into the future through the portraits.

We are Northern Virginia photographers focused on helping our clients throughout Northern Virginia, including Brambleton, VA and Broadlands, VA and surrounding communities. We want to help you document your family’s legacy through professional portraits.
