Meet Michael and Henry, twins of Virginia and Jacob and younger brothers of Zeke! They don’t come any cuter than these two little tikes! Having done several portraits already for Virginia and Jacob, we loved meeting their first child, Zeke. And, then along came these adorable guys. How much fun for us as a portrait photography studio to be able to do all the children’s baby pictures in one family! We have been able to witness this family’s formation starting back with Virginia and Jacob’s engagement portraits!
 

 
The Art
Just as they did for Zeke’s portraits, Virginia and Jacob once again selected our Contemporary Ice Frameless Finish for their wall art of the twins. For children’s portraits, in particular, Ice can be the perfect finish, allowing you to display them anywhere in your home including children’s rooms. It’s a sleek look that allows the portraits to take center stage as the focal point. This finish both highlights the drama of black and white and the vibrancy of color. It truly is a win-win whether you select black and white or color portraits!

Although Virginia and Jacob chose color for Zeke’s wall collection, for the Twins’ Newborn wall art, they chose black and white. It was the perfect choice!

Maternity photography is about celebrating your pregnancy and your body during this incredible time in your life. As trusted photographers in the Reston, VA area, our goal is to honor this time in a woman’s life through powerful imagery while ensuring they also enjoy their portrait session.

When you call to reserve your session time, we will chat with you about what to expect during your Maternity Session, but we are also happy to answer any questions you might have before you decide to work with us. We understand that women often have questions about their session. As a maternity photographer, we realize some women feel terrific in their final trimester while others, not so much. We want you to feel completely at ease during your session with us, and we will be happy to explain in detail what you can expect. We can customize your session as much as you want, of course!

Here are a few details for you to consider.

Clothes: You can wear whatever you like during your session. It can be as much or as little as you are comfortable wearing. Our portraits are always tasteful either way! Some women want their baby belly to be the primary focus of their pictures, while others don’t want that. We are okay with either or both! You can wear a beautiful flowing dress or wrap your body in a sheer piece of fabric highlighting your curves.

We urge you to browse our Maternity Clothing Suggestions Pinterest board! There are some lovely ideas there for maternity sessions. As part of our customized service, we are happy to help you pick out the clothing for your session.

Background: We can do your portraits in our Reston, VA area studio or our private outdoor portrait park not far away. One isn’t necessarily better than the other. They’re just different from each other. Which one you select will dictate the overall tone of your portrait. We can discuss your vision (if you have one) for your maternity portraits, and we can offer our thoughts and suggestions as well. We love working with our clients to bring their dreams to fruition!

Family: As a maternity photographer, we recommend including your spouse or partner in your portrait if you are comfortable with that. If you have children, we can include them as well! Some of our most poignant maternity portraits include family. It’s a great way to help a young child get excited about the arrival of their new baby brother or sister! The pictures with a young child included can be precious.

Our maternity photography in the Reston, VA & Great Falls, VA areas allows us the opportunity to collaborate with some very excited Moms-to-Be. However, we love including a dad or partner as well! There are lots of ways they can be part of a maternity session. Here are just a few ways!

In Profile
Maternity profile portraits are a beautiful way to celebrate a pregnancy, so why not include Dad in a few of those pictures? From standing behind Mom, arms wrapped around her and her beautiful belly, to kneeling or standing in front of her with his face or hands placed on the stomach, there are any number of angles we can take in a profile. The center of focus becomes the belly. These can be very powerful portraits.

Dad’s Perspective
As maternity photographers, we love shooting from unusual angles. How about a portrait shot from behind the dad toward the mom and his future son or daughter? The father can be kneeling, and the maternity photographer (us) kneels behind him and shoots toward the mom. It’s a unique perspective and allows the viewer to see things from the angle of the father-to-be!

Focus on the Belly
We love to shoot a few pictures focused entirely on the baby belly! We focus in tight on the parents’ hands placed on the stomach. These pictures can be poignant and very sweet. The hands represent all the love the parents feel for their unborn child. Another view of the belly is the father gently kissing the belly. Sometimes just placing his cheek against the belly as if he’s listening to the heartbeat can be equally compelling!

Ultrasound
One could argue that this is your baby’s first picture! An enlargement of your ultrasound picture with dad holding it in front of your belly or between the two of you is a cute picture.

Dad and Children
If you have other children, a fun portrait is a dad holding your other child as the child leans in to kiss the baby belly. These can be either a serious shot or a fun one depending on the moment and your child’s reaction. Often, we can shoot both – a somber one and a fun shot!

From Your Childhood to Theirs
Does either parent have something from their own childhood which is a beloved keepsake? A baby blanket? A teddy bear? A rattle? As a newborn photographer, we believe that including something from your childhood is a compelling way to connect you and your past to this newly born generation.

Connecting the Past to the Present
We all are the result of the generations before us. Using an heirloom keepsake from your parents, grandparents or other ancestor is a way of honoring the past. An heirloom piece from a previous generation creates a metaphorical bridge between the baby and their ancestors. Don’t hesitate to use an “old” item in a newborn portrait. Sometimes the older and more fragile an heirloom item looks, the more interest and dimension it adds to the picture.

An item such as a blanket made for your baby by a grandparent is another lovely thing to use in the portrait. It is a generous gesture and a nod to a loving grandparent.

Our newborn photography work in the Lowes Island, VA area means we get to work with brand new moms and dads! As a mom, we know how exhausting those first few months can be. So here are some tips on six things you can do for the new mom in your life:

1. Organize for food drop-off. When you’re exhausted the last thing you think about is food – eating or cooking it. Organize a food drop off on MealTrain.com or just through email. Meal Train is especially helpful because it’s chock-full of information such as places to order food from and grocery stores. It makes it easy for friends and family to participate in bringing food to the new parents!

2. Ask how you can be of help! There are so many little ways you can help which would be huge for the new parents. Run a load of laundry. Pick up some groceries (or ready-made meals). Run other errands for her. Watch the baby for a while so she can rest or nap. Go for a walk with her to get her out of the house and get some fresh air. The possibilities are endless. Just go and hang out with her while she’s running errands or at home with a fussy baby.

3. Help with household chores. We put this one in its own category because it can be a significant help for new parents, especially a new mom if dad’s already gone back to work. A clean house goes along way toward mental health when you’re cooped up at home with a new baby!

4. Send her off to be pampered. She might be tired but pampering can help her perk up, whether it’s a manicure and pedicure, a full-body massage, or haircut. Volunteer to watch the baby while she’s off to be pampered.

5. Help her organize the baby’s room. Now that junior has actually arrived, things will look a whole lot different. There will be stacks of diapers, clean/dirty laundry to wash and put away, baby things to build or find a spot for in the house. You can save the new mom a lot of time by helping with these things.

6. As Northern Virginia photographers, we have to give this one last tip: Offer to take some pictures of the baby or, better yet, give her a Newborn Portrait Session with Ever After!
