Our newborn photography work in the Lowes Island, VA area means we get to work with brand new moms and dads! As a mom, we know how exhausting those first few months can be. So here are some tips on six things you can do for the new mom in your life:

1. Organize for food drop-off. When you’re exhausted the last thing you think about is food – eating or cooking it. Organize a food drop off on MealTrain.com or just through email. Meal Train is especially helpful because it’s chock-full of information such as places to order food from and grocery stores. It makes it easy for friends and family to participate in bringing food to the new parents!

2. Ask how you can be of help! There are so many little ways you can help which would be huge for the new parents. Run a load of laundry. Pick up some groceries (or ready-made meals). Run other errands for her. Watch the baby for a while so she can rest or nap. Go for a walk with her to get her out of the house and get some fresh air. The possibilities are endless. Just go and hang out with her while she’s running errands or at home with a fussy baby.

3. Help with household chores. We put this one in its own category because it can be a significant help for new parents, especially a new mom if dad’s already gone back to work. A clean house goes along way toward mental health when you’re cooped up at home with a new baby!

4. Send her off to be pampered. She might be tired but pampering can help her perk up, whether it’s a manicure and pedicure, a full-body massage, or haircut. Volunteer to watch the baby while she’s off to be pampered.

5. Help her organize the baby’s room. Now that junior has actually arrived, things will look a whole lot different. There will be stacks of diapers, clean/dirty laundry to wash and put away, baby things to build or find a spot for in the house. You can save the new mom a lot of time by helping with these things.

6. As Northern Virginia photographers, we have to give this one last tip: Offer to take some pictures of the baby or, better yet, give her a Newborn Portrait Session with Ever After!

Michelle and Kunal chose us for their family portrait with their son Curran here in the Lowes Island, VA, and Herndon, VA area. Once Aidan was born (Michelle was pregnant during their family portrait), it seemed natural that we would do little Aidan’s newborn portraits as well!

Our work with newborn photography across Northern Virginia including Lowes Island, VA brings us into contact with a lot of new dads. It’s not unusual for fathers of newborns to be overwhelmed that first week!

Here are five helpful tips for the new dad during that first week:

1. Before the baby arrives, arrange to take some time off from work. You won’t regret it. Not only are those early days an important time to bond, but you can also expect to be exhausted! Focus on your new baby and your baby’s mother that first week. Be there for your new family.

2. While you take that first week to focus on your newly-formed family, try to keep visitors to a minimum while you adjust. Grandparents are always welcome – and so is anyone bringing food! Overall, though, limiting visits the first week is a good idea. That doesn’t mean you should become a hermit, though. Go for a stroll and get some fresh air. Being cooped up in the house with a new baby waking every few hours is exhausting. Fresh air and a little sunshine will help your mood!

3. Help! Help the new mother change diapers, help around the house with housework (we promise that it won’t kill you and your partner will love you all the more) and help her take care of your new baby. Do some laundry, dishes, or do the floors. Help change diapers, bathe the baby, or just hold the baby so the new mother can have a nap. Do you cook? It’s a good time to start if you don’t. Think of the brownie points you’re racking up by helping so much. Remember, she’s adjusting to this new life, too!

4. A critical piece of advice is to rest when you can. During those early days, the baby will sleep a lot giving you time to both get things done around the house as well as nap a bit to make up for lost sleep at night.

5. Lastly, as Northern Virginia photographers (hearty souls that we are), we’ll urge you to keep a camera around and, no matter how tired you are, snap away! Those first days are precious, and pictures can help record those beautiful moments you won’t necessarily remember. Besides scheduling a newborn portrait session with us, be ready to take pictures during those precious moments with your new baby! You don’t have to be a professional to take some good shots. Keep your camera or camera phone nearby.

As parents, ourselves, our most important piece of advice is to enjoy your family. Children don’t stay small forever. We have been practicing newborn photography in the Lowes Island, VA area and across Northern Virginia for almost two decades. We have had the privilege of witnessing and recording that special bond between new parents and their precious baby.

We enjoyed being Alistair’s newborn photographer in the Herndon, VA & Reston, VA area. This little guy with an oh-so-proper (and sweet) British name was the perfect gentleman during his photo session. His parents joined him for some dramatic but loving images in black and white.

Sometimes awake, at times asleep – it didn’t matter for Alistair’s baby photography! We captured some great portraits of Alistair and his parents, Ilse and Seth, during his Newborn Session just days after his birth.

Wall Art & Fine Art Album:

To make the most of their session, Ilse and Seth ordered a group of Wall Art portraits in addition to a Fine Art Album. The group of portraits combined with the album allowed them to put together a beautiful collection from their newborn session. It was a savvy investment of both their time and treasure. Alistair’s portraits will be cherished for decades and, one day, by Alistair when he’s an adult. We are confident Alistair’s own children will enjoy seeing their dad in portraits taken just days after his birth!

Contemporary Frameless Steel Finish:

Ilse and Seth chose our Contemporary Frameless Steel Finish for their wall portraits. This sleek frameless look compliments both the baby’s dramatic portraits and the decor of their home. With a frameless finish, the focal point instantly becomes the images alone. (Keep in mind that handcrafted frames can enhance and compliment a portrait as much as going without a frame. It simply depends on your style and taste and the portrait.)
 

 
Fine Art Album:

A group of Alistair’s portraits simply wasn’t enough! His parents so loved his portraits that they decided to purchase more of them. Displayed elegantly in an archival-quality album, these pictures are rated to last decades. These albums make great coffee table additions to share with family and friends. They also make terrific gifts for grandparents, godparents, and aunts and uncles.

A newborn photographer’s goal is to show just how cherished a baby is to the new parents. We think we accomplished that with Alistair’s sweet portraits.
