Mindy

I love seeing newborns when they are so NEW – seeing their fingers and toes at the very tiniest they will ever be in the baby’s life. Capturing their new little eyelashes and their little cupid lips so that they can be treasured is one of the things I enjoy the most about newborn photos.

I love capturing the very first family portrait of a new family – that’s one reason I always like to include Mom and Dad in newborn portraits with the baby, and not just taking portraits of just the baby alone for the whole session. I love seeing the fresh new love between Mom and Dad and their new baby. As a newborn photographer, we use the phrase “Time moves so fast. Photography stops it.” And it is never truer than at the moment when you catch the gaze of a new mom or dad looking at their new baby, realizing that the baby has finally ARRIVED!

I love customizing each session. We are not cookie cutter photographers! We don’t do the same thing twice – we are always customizing each session. We love spending the time and giving each session the time it deserves. We arrange to meet with the client before their session, so we can get to know them – that is integral to plan out the session.

Our typical clients cherish their newborn, so the absolute best part is recording that precious new part of their lives! The portrait can then grace the home of the parents who’ve loved that baby before he or she was even born. How could a child NOT feel loved by parents who do that?!
 

Joriana

As a baby and newborn photographer, I love being able to see the family again and see their new family grow. The parents are so happy to welcome their new little one into the world. It’s amazing to be able to see the baby grow and change from when they’re a newborn and sleeping a lot of the time, to when they start developing their personalities. It can be fun interacting with the babies. When they’re happy and smiley, it makes our job that much easier.

It is rewarding knowing that we are providing families with quality products while capturing this special milestone, products that are going to last them for such a long time. And when their child grows up, they will be able to have those same images on their wall to show their family – even years later!

Naturally, because we are both a newborn and maternity photographer, we work with a lot of pregnant women as well as newborns throughout the Northern Virginia area, which includes Ashburn, VA. Welcoming a newborn is a very exciting event in our lives, especially if it’s your first. Here are a few basics for you. As always, if concerned about anything regarding your child, call your pediatrician!

Newborns: 10 Things You Need to Know!

What’s up with the shape of baby’s head?

After nine months in your womb, and a journey through the birth canal, their head might not seem very round. Fine hair across their body is called lanugo and is perfectly normal.

It’s a one-way love affair right now!

It’s going to take about 6 or so weeks before you have more of an engaging baby! Meanwhile, they’re the boss who complains a lot. But don’t worry. Your caregiving isn’t going unnoticed by your baby according to L.A.-based pediatrician Christopher Tolcher, MD quoted in the Parents article: “He feels comforted by his father or mother, he feels attachment, he likes to be held.”

Keeping umbilical cord dry.

Maintain the cord at his belly button dry and it should fall off within two weeks. Meanwhile, sponge baths are in order. If the cord gets wet, you can pat it dry.

Yes, there’s a soft spot.

Most parents are intimidated or fearful of the fontanel, the baby’s soft spot on their skull’s crown. “It’s okay to touch the soft spot and baby’s hair near it,” says Tanya Remer Altmann, MD, a pediatrician and author of Mommy Calls.

Are they eating enough?

Newborns tend to eat every two to three hours slowly spreading out the time in between. However, it can be difficult to know if they’re getting enough nourishment. You can tell by their weight. Babies initially lose about five to eight percent of their birth weight in the first week. They begin gaining it back by the second week.

Dry skin and newborns.

Within a few days of their birth, you might notice their skin becoming drier. This is normal, and you might even notice some peeling and flaking. Soon after the first month, baby acne, little bumps, and diaper rash can begin to make an appearance! This is one reason we recommend newborn portraits during the first week of life!

Stepping out with baby.

You can go out with your child. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Keep them out of the sun and away from sick people. Attending crowded events or being in crowded, indoor spaces where germs can easily be transmitted is not a good idea.

Why are they crying?!

It’s difficult in the early days to know what that shrieking means. Are they hungry, cold, dirty diaper? As time goes on, however, you will get to know their cries and what they mean – most of the time! Things do get easier.

Sleeping? Yes!

Newborns sleep quite a bit – but not always for long periods of time! Because they need to eat every two to three hours, you’re not getting much sleep either. It will get better, but in the meantime, consider getting baby on a day and night schedule. During the day, don’t let him snooze too long; wake him up after about three hours to feed. Then at night, you can let him sleep for longer periods of time (after he’s regained the weight he lost at birth). You’ll be happy to know that, in general, by three months of age, babies can sleep for six to eight hours!

A short-lived stage!

As the parents of a newborn, you’re likely exhausted, stressed, and wondering what happened to your life. However, it’s important to realize that the newborn phase is short-lived and passes in a blink. Take lots of pictures and notes during those days! You will not remember as much as you think you will.

Milestones to consider

Maternity

Some mothers-to-be like to start with a portrait during their pregnancy. It is a beautiful time in a woman’s life. Even if you don’t feel beautiful, you are! And, your maternity portrait will reflect that innate beauty and glow. A maternity portrait is a baby picture in some ways. It’s just that they’re not born yet!
 

Newborn

Oh, those first few days of your precious baby’s life are glorious! Well, ok, almost! You’re likely tired, sore, and there is a new little human screaming for food! It’s an adjustment of gigantic proportions as you try to get into a new rhythm of life. However, we strongly encourage that newborn portraits be taken in the first week of life, ideally. During those first several days, newborns are far easier to pose, and they sleep a lot! Not to mention that most parents are too exhausted at home to take pictures themselves so they miss out on these precious first days!

We can capture everything about this new little one, from their tiny lips to the tiny toes, and baby wrinkles. Sweetness abounds! These first few days are perfect and precious for newborn photos.
 

6- to 8-Months and Sitting

At around six to eight months, babies are able to sit with some propping up or assistance. They’re smiling and interacting. They can also grab for toys and even laugh. It’s an excellent time for the next set of portraits marking a milestone! This is a great age for cute outfits as well!
 

1 Year and Walking

This is the next big milestone we like to photograph. It’s usually anywhere between nine months to fourteen months. Their personalities are blooming and they like to engage others! They might have teeth at this point. Even if they are barely walking at this age, it’s a good time to talk portraits. They’re likely carrying their bodies in a different way and are slowly starting to resemble a toddler. Their first birthday marks an important milestone and it’s a great time for a professional portrait!

Newborn Photography: Capturing the first days of life

During a newborn’s first few days, they still closely resemble what they looked like in-utero. Their eyes are most often closed, still somewhat puffy from the womb’s fluids; their fingers will curl reflexively; and, they usually are most comfortable in a curled fetal position. It’s a precious window of opportunity to capture them this way! It’s important to seize that window and photograph your newborn before their 8th-day of life when they begin to change very quickly.
