Virginia and Jacob, So This is Love! Maternity Session | Northern VA Maternity Photographer

As a Lowes Island, VA maternity photographer, there is always something memorable about each client. What was most memorable about Virginia and Jacob is how very happy they were to be expecting!

Getting to know our customers is important and is a critical part of the customer experience our studio offers. We take our time with clients to get to know them.

After doing several portrait sessions with Virginia and Jacob, we can attest to how much love they show for one another and their children. When they first approached us about their maternity portraits, they didn’t want anything formal. Casual, fun, and loving portraits were the way to go with these two. It was a joyful time capturing them during their maternity session.

As a newborn photographer, we photographed Virginia and Jacob’s firstborn Zeke followed by their twins, Michael and Henry. (It’s Zeke in these photos waiting to be born!) Our work has documented the formation of this lovely family like a photographic journal or timeline!

The decision to invest in portraits capturing these milestones as their family grew is one they will cherish for years. Meanwhile, they enjoy their pictures and the sheer love and joy for their children and each other.

We always look forward to the opportunity to work with Virginia, Jacob, and their boys!

As Northern Virginia photographers, we would love to work with your family as well. Please contact our portrait studio if you would like to discuss the possibility of working with us either as a Lowes Island, VA family, newborn, or maternity photographer.

How do we help our clients choose the best portraits? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Newborn photography in the Lowes Island, VA area allows us to be part of something so much bigger than us: a new life. Documenting a newborn with their parents is emotional and meaningful. So, it’s not surprising that at times parents ask for our help in selecting their final portraits.

Although the client always has the last say in what portraits they choose, we are here to help them! Sometimes our perspective can help them pick those special portraits that will most genuinely and emotionally tell their story.

During a portrait session of any kind, we do our best to draw up the love and joy they have as a family. For a newborn session, the parents often arrive tired, even exhausted. Mom has just given birth, and everything is new. Suddenly, life is about making adjustments. But once their portrait session begins, and that exhausted mom or dad peers into the face of that tiny baby, a jumble of emotions well up. It’s up to us – as experienced Northern Virginia photographers – to capture those emotions.

However, newborn photography isn’t just about taking a shot of Mom’s face looking at the baby, although that can be part of it. Sometimes it’s in capturing how securely but still awkwardly Dad holds this new little life in his big hands. Or, it can be an uncomplicated but powerful image of Mom’s lips pressed against the baby’s little forehead. Sometimes it’s a shot of the baby’s tiny fingers and toes.

So, as you can see, choosing the right portraits is more than just picking the one in which the baby looks the best. We want our parents to look at their fine art portraits years from now. We want them to smile in remembrance of holding their baby when it was so tiny. We want them to say, “I know I must have been exhausted, but I don’t remember that!” It’s the joy, awe, and love we want them to remember through our portraiture. We want to evoke those emotions decades from now from the images we capture. That’s great portrait work.

We enjoy working with our newborn photography clients, whether in Lowes Island, VA or elsewhere, to help them create the most powerful and meaningful infant fine art portraits!

Should I use the hospital photographer for my Newborn? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Should I use the hospital photographer for my Newborn? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Hiring a hospital photographer can be tempting. After all, your baby has just arrived, you are thrilled and want the earliest images possible. As a Lowes Island, VA baby photographer who specializes in newborn photography we suggest that you skip the hospital photographer and focus on newborn fine art portraits instead.

There are several reasons for our recommendation:

1. Hiring a hospital photographer can mean working with a hospital-approved photographer and not a photographer of your choice. You meet the hospital photographer minutes before you let them into your room to do your baby’s pictures. They can be in a rush as they go from room to room. Keep in mind that this often takes place just hours after you have given birth.

2. Doing portraits after you leave the hospital rather than in the hospital means no wrist or foot bands; the swelling has gone down; you’re feeling better, and your newborn is settling into its new life. That “hospital feeling” has gone. If you’re feeling better, you’ll look better for the camera! The same applies to your brand new baby! They’ll be settling into their new life at home versus a noisy hospital!

3. Doing newborn fine art portraits instead of quick hospital pictures allows you the time to research Northern Virginia photographers and their work with newborn photography. You can review their portfolio and even interview them. You can plan your session and discuss your ideas with the photographer. You will do all this calmly at your leisure while you’re still pregnant and well in advance of your due date. You’ll be able to hire whomever you want and get what you want from your newborn’s portraits!

If you live in the Lowes Island, VA area and would like to discuss our experience in newborn photography, we’d be pleased to discuss our work with you and show you some examples.

Baby Photography Tips & Tricks: Lighting | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Baby Photography Tips & Tricks: Lighting | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Hiring a professional newborn photographer is an excellent idea but something you can’t do on a 24/7 basis! As a Purcellville, VA area photographer, we can offer you several lighting tips to help you take better baby pictures at home. Correct lighting can transform an image from an ordinary snapshot into a frameable picture.

Outdoor Lighting:

When possible, let Mother Nature work in your favor for pictures of babies. Shoot the photos in your yard or a local park. The best times for natural lighting are very early in the morning (just after sunrise) or just before sunset.

Avoid the middle of the day sun! No one likes a squinting baby, and the harsh glare of the midday sun can wash out an otherwise great picture. However, if you must shoot during the middle of the day, do your pictures in the shade and use the flash if necessary. Remember that any light which shines behind your subject will leave the subject’s face in the dark. That’s where your flash can balance out the light. You will need to set your flash on manual to shoot despite the bright light.

Indoor Lighting:

If you’re shooting indoors, then you will likely have to do some test shots while looking for the best natural light. Try not to use a flash which can leave dark shadows – not to mention that babies don’t like sudden bright lights. If at all possible, shoot near (but not directly in front of) a window or open doorway where natural light casts inside.

If needed, move a lamp (halogen works great for this!) near and in front of the baby to cast a soft glow. Keep a few feet between the light and the baby. The effect you’re looking for is a soft light, not a harsh glare which will wash out the baby in the image. Watch for shadows created by the lamp! Sometimes angling the light source can help avoid unsightly shadows.

If you feel that one light isn’t enough, we recommend adding a second light source. Position one on each side with one being closer than the other which helps “highlight” the baby.

Lighting can be very tricky. We recommend practice, practice, and more practice! With digital photography, you can instantly see the results and make adjustments.

We love to share these tips with you and we hope they’re helpful! As a Purcellville, VA newborn photographer, we are always happy to professionally photograph your baby. Contact us for an appointment!

What are the benefits of skin-to-skin contact with your baby? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

As a Purcellville, VA area photographer, some of our favorite baby pictures involve skin-to-skin contact. These are some of the most beautiful and intimate portraits we create of a parent (or parents) and their baby.

A fine art portrait reflecting a mother or father holding and touching their newborn baby as they gaze at the little face is priceless. It is an aesthetic that we as a baby photographer strive to capture because it captures the truest spirit of parental love. We know that these portraits are a symbol of love to be treasured for many years.

Skin to skin contact, however, goes beyond beauty and intimacy. The medical community has long championed the benefit of skin-to-skin contact, especially for preemies and newborns. Since first looked at in a groundbreaking study in Bogotá, Colombia in the 1970’s, a number of studies have concluded that there are numerous benefits, especially to preemies, including but not limited to:

– lowers stress in the baby
– lower rates of infection
– lower rates of death
– stabilizes weight for low-birth weight infants
– better breastfeeding rates
– helps with bonding

A 2014 ABC News report highlighted how one hospital in California uses volunteers to cuddle infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The program is particularly beneficial for those babies who spend a long time in the NICU. It can be difficult for working parents to spend long hours at the hospital holding their newborn baby. Instead, the volunteers hold and cuddle these delicate little babies, and the baby’s breathing and heart rates relax just from being held! The infants benefit in extraordinary ways from the power of human touch.

As a baby photographer, we often witness the power of touch and the effect it can have on babies we’re photographing. Capturing that moment between parent and child is an honor and something we cherish. Moreover, those are the portraits that parents treasure.

Whether we are doing your child’s baby pictures in the Purcellville, VA area or you are doing the pictures yourself at home, we strongly encourage you to capture a few of that skin-to-skin intimacy. There is no stronger image of the love you feel for your baby than that!
