Every once in a while, someone will ask us what our favorite picture is, so we thought we’d talk about one of Mindy’s favorite maternity photography portraits.

Mindy’s favorite portrait and why

“One of my favorite portraits is one that we feature prominently on our website of wedding couple Donald and Tarsha. They had an amazing wedding and soon after got pregnant with their first child.

“Why is it one of my favorites? During their maternity portrait session, I was fortunate enough (and quick enough) to capture the candid look on Donald’s face at the moment he felt his son kick inside Tarsha’s belly! That look is one of love mixed with amazement and then pride at the anticipation of becoming a father. It was a priceless moment captured on camera for this lovely couple to enjoy for many, many years.

“It takes a mixture of skill and opportunity to capture such a treasured moment. Experience has taught me to be ready at all times during a portrait session – but, above all, to be vigilant. You can have all the skills in the world, but if you don’t pay active attention to your clients during their session, you could miss something. I could have missed this moment had I not been paying close attention. Fortunately, I was indeed paying attention and caught it!

Most clients don’t realize that our newborn photography work in the Lowes Island, VA & Herndon, VA area keeps us busy even when we aren’t shooting a session. Professional photography is about more than just taking pictures.

Preparation
To create beautiful, fine art photography, a lot of work and thought go into prepping for your newborn’s portrait session. We don’t want to waste your time once you’ve arrived, so there is a fair amount of advanced preparation that we need to do including equipment and inventory checks. Of course, there is a lot that must wait until the actual session, but there are a lot of things we can do before you even arrive, including choosing backdrops and floors, pulling props, and setting up the space especially for your session. Which lights will we use? Which lenses will get the shots we know you want? Knowing and choosing all of this before the session even begins means the end result will be a portrait you’re proud to display and to show to your children and their children.

Personalization
Custom photography means personalized photography. We need to prepare for each session and put a lot of thought into how the session will transpire from our end as your Northern Virginia photographers. We like to tailor the session to the client. It isn’t cookie-cutter photography; it never is for us. Shooting a maternity portrait in our studio isn’t the same as doing a family session with three children in our private portrait park, for example. They are vastly different, and we need to prep for each one differently. We plan ahead of each session and plan accordingly.

Post-production editing
Some days we spend hours and hours editing. We can sometimes put as many hours into editing as we do into prepping and taking pictures. It’s virtually impossible to take the perfect picture out in the field. That’s where post-production editing comes into play. The more experienced and skilled the photographer, the better they are in post-production. It’s where we fine tune the pictures to perfect them and turn them into what the client is expecting from us.

As you can see, fine art photography is about more than just shooting baby pictures! There’s a process involving hours of work away from the camera.
