Does size matter for Wall Art? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Any reputable Northern Virginia newborn photographer, particularly here in the Broad Run, VA and Ashburn Village, VA areas, will tell you that size does matter. If a portrait, especially a wall-hung picture, is too small, you lose many of the details which help make a fine art portrait the piece of art it is. So, how do you know what’s the best size?

If you’ve gone through the investment – financial and time – to have professional portraits, do you want to waste it on a tiny-sized picture to hang on a wall? Professional photographers (including a child photographer), recommend that portraits be somewhere between 60 to 70 percent of real-life size if you want to be able to see facial details. With each additional person in the picture, you should go up a size.

Below, you can see the to-scale guide to understanding how different print sizes would look relative to your living space.

See the difference?! A good rule of thumb test is to do the following: Assuming the portrait has been adequately lit, try hanging the picture and step back three steps. Can you still see the color of the subject’s eyes? If you can’t, the portrait is too small. A family portrait of three family members needs to be a minimum of a 20” × 30” inches to be fully appreciated.

From a design perspective, you should keep in mind that once you hang art, the space around it becomes negative space. The negative space “swallows” the portrait and makes it appear smaller than it is. While an 8” x 10” desktop picture looks beautiful on your desk because you’re standing or sitting close to it, on a wall an 8″ x 10″ will appear tiny.

Here is an example:

See how small that 8×10 is on the wall?!

Sizing for your Wall

Once you provide us with your smartphone picture of the wall in your home where you intend to display your portrait, we can show you exactly how the portrait will look like on that wall using our design software. With that software, we can create wall concepts and show them to you directly on the smartphone images of your walls. This software is a phenomenal product able to show you just what your portrait will look like in your home! You avoid having to guess what a certain picture size might look like. An appropriately sized picture can make or break your design in that space!

See what a showstopper the image below is when it’s appropriately sized for the wall?

Now here it is framed.

We can also show you what a wall grouping would look like on your wall! We can show you a variety of sizes displayed to create a showcase wall that stops you in your tracks.

It would be our pleasure to create custom, heirloom artwork for you of those you cherish. As a Northern Virginia newborn photographer working throughout Broad Run, VA and Ashburn Village, VA, we would love to work with you and introduce you to Ever After’s phenomenal client experience! Indoor Studio Portraits | Northern VA Newborn Photographers

Late spring, summer, and fall are favorites for outdoor portraits. The verdant gardens in summer and autumn’s cooling temperatures and vibrant colors beckon us all outdoors. But it wouldn’t be prudent as a Northern Virginia newborn photographer not to also offer a fully-equipped indoor studio here in the Broad Run, VA area! Our indoor studio allows us the opportunity to do a very different style of photography. It also gives us the ability to control lights and temperature in ways we cannot do outdoors.

Regardless of the season, our indoor studio is available for use by our clients. The decision to go outside or stay indoors for your portrait is one we’d be happy to discuss with you individually. As Northern Virginia photographers know, weather can be fickle, and it’s good to decide ahead of time if you want to keep it outdoors no matter the weather, or if you’re willing to move indoors. We’re happy to work with you either way in any season!

Indoor Studio Portraits

There are several advantages to consider when it comes to indoor versus outdoor studios.

Controlled Environment

We wish we could control Mother Nature, but we can’t. One never knows what to expect despite a weatherman’s best estimates. Natural elements can affect an outdoor photo session – for the better or for worse. Short of a blizzard, Mother Nature won’t be interfering with indoor sessions. The studio is a controlled setting free of all of these variables. It’s also far easier to control the lighting in a studio than it is in the open-air when we are at the mercy of the elements. For newborn portraits, we exclusively photograph sessions indoors for these very reasons.

Baby’s Style

Let’s admit it: Babies are adorably cute! There’s no wrong or right when it comes to selecting a setting or venue with children’s photography. With newborns, however, indoor studios can offer more convenience, comfort, and flexibility. Temperature can be controlled, and parents might feel more comfortable knowing that.

Convenience

An indoor studio means all our equipment is right there! Our clients can just walk into the studio and be ready to do portraits. There’s no walking around in an outdoor park which might be a bit difficult for some older clients or very young children.

Timeless

Portraits can evoke a timeless style, and black and white studio portraits are very popular for that reason. An indoor portrait tends to be a classic look with a touch more formality. Whether you choose Fine Art Black and White or our Today’s Classics, you’ll be sure to love your family’s portraits

Fewer Distractions

Outdoor locations have pros and cons for family and baby portraits. Our outdoor portrait park offers children more freedom to roam and explore. It’s a beautiful outdoor space, and most kids love it. It also can provide an overdose of stimuli for some children. In a park, there can be more distractions. An indoor studio offers more tranquility with fewer distractions other than the equipment.

Tips for Looking Great During Pregnancy | Northern VA Baby Photographer

Tips for Looking Great During Pregnancy | Northern VA Baby Photographer

Tips for Looking Great During Pregnancy | Northern VA Baby Photographer

There isn’t much vanity during pregnancy. Most women don’t realize how beautiful they look during pregnancy, especially if they’re not feeling well. However, our work taking maternity pictures in the Broad Run, VA and Northern Virginia area gives us the opportunity to show how truly beautiful pregnant women are. We can assure you that every single one has something beautiful about them! Having said that, though, this article by Terri Isidro-Cloudas from American Baby caught our attention recently. The highlights are below. You can read the full article here if you like.

Try some of these tips to help you look and feel your best during your pregnancy:

Keep it simple.

Keep everything simple – your outfits, your jewelry and your accessories. As your curves begin to show, stick to clean cuts with simple lines and no busy or large patterns. If you want to add pattern, do it with a scarf.

Accentuate the positive.

For many women, pregnancy is the first time they find themselves voluptuous. Enjoy it! Accentuate it! How about a top with a nice sexy neckline?

Hair.

Simple is good with hair, as well. Consider shortening the length for easier styling. If it’s already short, you might want to grow it out a bit for a different look. Whatever you decide keep it easy to care for!

Improve your posture.

As newborn and baby photographers, we can tell you how important your posture is throughout pregnancy and after the baby is born. As your body changes and weight begins to shift, maintain your posture to avoid back aches! Try to keep your hips and shoulders in line as you walk, and keep your back straight by tucking a pillow behind you when you sit. Without good posture, your back and joints can begin to bother you.

Nurture the skin.

Take special care of your skin during your pregnancy. Changing hormones can mean changes in your skin. Be sure to moisturize and maintain a daily cleansing routine.

We look forward to welcoming you into our Broad Run, VA area studio for your treasured maternity pictures. Remember that all women are beautiful when pregnant. That’s why it’s a remarkable time to do a memorable, heirloom portrait.

Decorate your child’s nursery with family and baby portraits | Northern VA Baby Photographer

A child’s bedroom needs to be their sanctuary in the same manner as the master suite is to the parents. A child’s space needs to serve as a refuge for them, a place to feel beloved and comforted. Photographs placed in their room can help evoke these feelings. We know this as a Northern Virginia newborn photographer and as parents ourselves. To be good photographers, we also need an eye for design and composition. It is something many of our clients across the Broad Run, VA, Ashburn Village, VA and surrounding areas have come to expect – and rightly so!

If you do an internet search for “newborn photographer near me,” it will result in thousands of leads. However, it’s important that before you invest in a photographer, you know they are highly reputable, that you appreciate their style, and that you are comfortable with their abilities. They shouldn’t just take your newborn’s portrait. They should be able to discuss the photographic process with you, including how you plan on displaying the portrait.

Like any artistic medium, great photography is an intimate personal reflection. That principal influences each portrait we do. This is why when our clients order portraits, we encourage them to consider decorating their children’s spaces with the child’s portrait as well as family portraits! This is one way of creating that sense of refuge, and it’s a way of showing how much they love their children.

We believe in the power of a picture to influence the design and mood of any space. We use a specialized software program to show each client how any of their portraits will look on a specific wall in their home! All a customer needs to do is snap a picture of the wall, send it to us, and we upload it into specialized interior design software for photographers. When clients arrive to select portraits, we can show them exactly how a picture would look on their wall.

Displaying your portraits in your child’s nursery or bedroom allows them to enjoy the pictures and reminds them of their family’s story. There’s more, though. Seeing your own portraits every day can help create powerful, lasting memories. The more you look at a picture, the more it’s committed to memory. Your child can grow up seeing pictures of themselves and their family and feeling how much they are loved!

As a Northern Virginia newborn photographer working with clients across Broad Run, VA and Ashburn Village, VA, we believe children should grow up surrounded by the love of their families. Photography can play a wonderful role in that circle of love.
