This is why when our clients, especially those with babies or young children, ask us how often they should update their baby portraits, our answer is always the same: often and as regularly as you can. It’s an investment you won’t regret!
 

 
As a parent you might not notice how much your baby changes from month to month, but just ask someone who’s not seen the baby in a few weeks or months. They’ll definitely see the changes! Those precious early months and years fly by as any busy parent with older children can tell you. It’s a whirlwind of diaper changes, sleepless nights, naps, feedings, and, yes, lots of joy!

We offer a first-year baby plan, named “Bebe Coterie,” to simplify your life, while recording that precious first year and several milestones.

• Our plan begins when your child is a newborn. We recommend a portrait shortly after their birth during their first week of life. You can also add on a Maternity Session to your Newborn Session. Maternity photography provides you with stunning and profound portraits of this most amazing time in your life.
• Once your child is sitting, sometime between the sixth to eighth month, we do a second portrait recording your precious cherub sitting up.
• The final portrait of the first-year plan usually takes place around the time they turn one year, when they are standing or walking.

This Bebe Coterie Baby Plan allows you to capture their first year milestones. Most parents then create a beautiful wall display of those milestone portraits.
 

 
How often you update your baby’s portraits after that first year is entirely up to you as the parent. As baby photographers, however, we recommend regular portrait sessions to document their changing faces, little bodies, and posture as they grow and begin to move around. The result is the creation of a sentimental and loving portrait gallery of their life as they grow. The time will come when you will be grateful you regularly captured their growth. We hear all too often from clients how they wish they’d had more professional portraits of their children!

The red thread might stretch or tangle, but it will never break. That Chinese proverb is used often to refer to the special bonds of adoption. The red thread connects a newborn wherever it might be in the world to their adoptive parents waiting for them somewhere else in the world. So should you include a sibling in your newborn portraits? The answer to this frequently asked question is a resounding YES! Yes, you absolutely should include a sibling or siblings in a newborn portrait. We tell our Lansdowne, VA and other Northern VA newborn photography clients this all the time. Why?

Well, let us count the ways:

• Ask the adult last born in any family if there are as many pictures of them as there are of the first born in the family. We bet the answer is no. The first born is usually welcomed with much joy and accolade. By the time you’re on your third or fourth, mmm, things have changed a bit. There’s still joy and accolade, but not as much time. We bet there aren’t as many pictures of the last child as the first. As a baby photographer, we’re just saying! Don’t hate the messenger!

• The arrival of a baby is a beautiful and joyous time for everyone – well, almost everyone! The arrival of a new baby brother or sister can be a little contentious or confusing for a sibling. Most psychologists would tell you to find ways to include the older siblings in welcoming the new baby. Including them in newborn photography is a terrific way to show them in a tangible way (via a photo) how much they, too, matter to you and in the family!

• Some of the most moving baby portraits we have seen have been with an older child and the recently arrived baby. And, while you might enjoy that portrait, the time will come when those children as adults will truly appreciate that portrait of them together.

• The newborn or baby portrait with an older sibling can be serious and dramatic (think formal black and white) or casual and charming (think casual color photo). The more serious one can be yours. The casual one can be displayed in the older sibling’s room where they can see themselves and their new baby sister or brother every day? What better way for the sibling to feel part of the baby’s life?

We don’t leave it to nature all the time, though. At times, she needs a little help! We have some great props for added interest to your portrait. Our red vintage truck is a favorite with men and boys. Our antique sofas in several colors add drama to an already rich and lush summer landscape. Our bridge and pier set by an idyllic pond reminds us of a time captured by Norman Rockwell in his iconic paintings. We can use any of these in your baby’s portrait.

Imagine your sleeping baby on its tummy laying on one of our classic and elegant sofas. A boy placed on the hood of the vintage, red truck is also darling – heck, we can use it with girls as well! There are many options and we’re happy to discuss and compare ideas.
